Bored?? More like Board!!

Think back to a time before life was all about hustle and bustle. Back when kids used to stop at the corner diner or drugstore to pickup a malted milkshake or a box of cracker jacks. Okay fine, maybe not quite that far, but seriously, Board games seemed to vanish during the entire past two decades. At least that's what it seemed like to me.

I hadn't played a board game in about 15 years, and once I did, I realized how much I missed them! Board games are making a huge comeback, and I'm glad for that because it's a great way to bring the family together for some quiet time ( or maybe not so quiet depending on how competitive the family is).

Board Games aren't Just Child's Play

For all of you young parents out there, board game night doesn't mean you have to cringe at the thought of having to spend an hour or two with the kids fighting over the rules, or getting involved with games that are too complex for them (or even you).

There is a myriad of awesome new-age games that are designed to be fun for all ages, and quick to pick up as far as learning them!

You don't even have to be a parent at all to enjoy a game night with friends! I have a blast playing all different types of games with my friends once in a while. I ordered Apples to Apples from Amazon a few months ago, and it is so much fun!! (Ages 12+)

Having Fun AND Saving Money

How good does that sound?

Well, you will be doing just that. Think about it, you buy an inexpensive board game from Target or AmazonĀ  for about $15-20. That's half of what you'd spend on a night out to the movies with the family, and guess what? Board games have virtually infinite replay value! You can play again and again!

If you and the family were to substitute a movie night with a game night, you could save about $20 every time! If you do a movie night about every 2-3 weeks or so, that could end up saving you about $200/year without sacrificing fun at all! You will most likely have more fun with game night, as well as have the chance to be much more interactive with your family!

disclaimer: I love going to the movies and have nothing against them :)

Old School Favorite #1 - Chutes n' Ladders

The Exciting Up and Down Game for Little People! This game is so awesome and simple, even for children who can't read.

Players spin and move their pawns square by square, depending on the number spun. If the pawn lands on a picture square at the bottom of a ladder, children climb up with a good deed! Naughty deeds slide you back when you land on a picture square at the top of a chute!

I had so much fun as a kid playing this game, and I know your kids will love it, too!

Ages 3-6

Candy Land - The World of Sweets Board Game
Candy Land Classic Game with revised art on the cards and board.
Amazon Price: $8.00
List Price: $10.99

Old School Favorite #2 - Candy Land

In Candy Land, there is this dude named King Kandy. The Imperial Head Bonbon and Grand Jujube of Candy Land disappeared. After that, the Candy Land board game was born. Captivated by the story of a kidnapped king and eager to help find him, little ones move their gingerbread pawns along a rainbow path and through a land of candy characters, all subjects of King Kandy's realm.

The playing cards are thoughtfully designed for non-readers and are coded with colorful squares matching the stepping-stone path or an occasional token matching one of the characters' symbols.

Children (young AND old) can't help but be delighted by Candy Land. It's delicious! Instructions are in both Spanish and English. Candy Land is good for 2,3 or 4 players, and you'll have a blast with your little ones!

Games for teens and otherwise cranky people

Don't worry parents, you'll like them too!

Doesn't it seem like you would do anything to get your teens to want to do something with you? They're always buried in their phones or lap tops and everything revolving around their world "you wouldn't understand!"

(yeah, right)

Like we weren't in their shoes what seemed like a blink of an eye ago, right? Well, here are some suggestions to the right that will really peak their interest. I recommend a week night to start. Maybe order a pizza or something you know is their favorite for dinner, and set up shop in the living room! If you would never think of eating dinner on the living room floor, that's only going to entice your teen even more to want to do so.

Leave the tv on, who cares. Once they start playing these games, and getting into them, they won't even notice when you mute it or turn it off completely!

Board games are an excellent way to get the family together and have a fun time doing it!

*These games are recommended for teens between the ages of 12 and 98!*

Get out there and Game!

I hope you have found this page to be both exciting, informative and a little inspiring! Board Games are an excellent way to connect with the people around you while having a lot of fun!

Can you recommend something for older kids? It's hard to keep them away from video games. We have had some success with singing games like Spontuneous.

Cranium is an awesome game that is fun for ages teens on up to adults. It gets pretty competitive, and really requires you to use those brain cells. I would give that one a try!
